We get the AARP magazine. I read a couple and realized it was a waste of time, I could read HuffPo or NYT and see the same barf. So, I just wrote to AARP at this address:

Please remove me from your mauling list. I just turned 50 and, because your organization’s political views are so far to the left and support the ObamaDeathCare proposal (which I READ), I want nothing to do with your disseminated disinformation.

My husband, Dr. Happy, who also resides at this address would like to have his name removed as well. He is a physician who, in 1985, saw the demise of true “health care” coming through the vehicle of “HMO”s.

This ObamaDeathCare lead up to single-payer “health” care will be as disastrous - if not more so - than those in Canada or UK.

It will cause thousands of doctors to LEAVE medicine (as he did),

cause more suffering for patients (why do you think the wealthy come to the USA for treatments and Ted Kennedy didn’t go to hospitals in his HOME STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS?)

and cause people to LOSE CHOICES (in UK, thyroid patients are being told they only have 2 options and, if they choose dessicated thyroid meds, they will not be eligible for further treatment through the NHS.)

Stop pushing the Euthanasia For Seniors and Other Useless Eaters Bill and go back to doing something useful - getting seniors discounts for “stuff”.

Dr. Happy and I had a little clash of the minds....granted, we DO read different websites. I tend to be more Conservative, he is more all-over-the-place.

The story is this:

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Three American tourists are believed to be in Iranian custody after they may have strayed across the border from Iraq during a mountain hike, Kurdish officials said Friday.

Four Americans -- two of them students in Syria -- traveled from Syria to Turkey and then into Kurdistan in northern Iraq, arriving at Irbil on Tuesday, according to Peshrow Ahmed, spokesman for the security manager of Sulaimaniya, where they arrived Thursday after driving from Irbil.

All four spent the night at the Nirwan Hotel, according to the owner of the facility.

Three of the group left early Friday in a taxi for Ahmed Awa near Iraq's border with Iran, planning to hike in the mountains there, Ahmed said. The fourth member of the group was ill and stayed behind.

The taxi driver dropped the three off near the border and returned to town, he said.

Ahmed Awa police spotted the hikers at one point on Friday, Ahmed said, and warned them that they were near the Iranian border -- which is not marked in the area -- and that they should be careful.

The group was in contact with their companion in Sulaimaniya until about 1:30 p.m. Friday, when they reported they were "surrounded by Iranian soldiers," Ahmed said. No further communication was received.

Officials in Sulaimaniya are meeting to devise a strategy to bring the hikers home safely, Ahmed said.

State Department spokesman Robert Wood said the U.S. Embassy "is aware of the reports and is investigating. We are using all available means to determine the facts in this case."

Mudhafer Mohammed, owner of the Nirwan Hotel, said the hikers said they had come to the area because they heard it was safe, saying they were considering a trip to Ahmed Awa. But, he said, he advised them against it.

"I warned them many times," Mohammed said.

"When they told me that they are planning to go to Ahmed Awa, I told them, 'Don't go there because it is unsafe for you because you're American and Ahmed Awa is very close to the Iranian border,'" he said.
The fourth American who had stayed behind left the hotel about 4:30 p.m., Mohammed said, asking him to take care of their luggage and saying he would not return. Later, he said, Sulaimaniya security forces took the luggage from the hotel.

Whose fault is it that these three "tourists" are in an Iranian prison? And why are they there?

More importantly, will Bill Clinton go to Iran and promise Akmunutjob free-rein on HIS COUNTRY'S nuclear program to get the twits home?

My Adventures in Canning Chickens

How I got there? Ah you did have to ask, didn't you?

Well, I had these three kosher chicken in the freezer. Ralph's has been selling them frozen, so I've been picking one up when I think about it. We ran out of room in the freezer for my chocolate ice cream, and this is the Wrong Time of the Month for that crap.

So on Tuesday morning, I took them out and thawed them. (I DO have priorities, yah know.) On Tuesday in the late afternoon, I realized that the big meat pans were Somewhere in a box. My boxes of "stuff" are on the patio and in the garage. So, I located the two pans. Procrastinated. Surfed the Net. Finally boiled the chickens. It was 11PM when they were done. Cooled 'em and stuck 'em in the fridge.

Today was C-day. Cleaned and assembled the new pressure cooker. Picked the chicken off the bones and put back in the fridge. Made a big vat of broth from turnips, carrots, onions, celery, garlic, salt, bay leaves, parsnips and pepper.

Filled the pint jars with meat. Ladled the hot broth over them, cleaned off the rims and put on the caps.

Got the water boiling in the canner. Put the jars in the canner and tightened the lid. Got the whole thing boiling without the pressure controller on the pan, like the instruction manual said to do. Put the controller on, turned down the heat, adjusted in until the pressure was 11 psi. All good. Book said to keep on the pressure for 75 minutes. Cool.

Thirty minutes into processing time, I am in the living room eating lunch and I hear a "pop". I look up and streamy water is squirting straight up from the canner to the ceiling. Yeah, the overpressure plug blew. So, I got the canner turned off, the pressure released and the water mopped up. (BTW - a Swiffer mop with a towel works wonders to clean a ceiling. Darn it was filthy!)

The book, of course, said that you need a new plug. Try finding one in California. I ordered three on line. They'll be here sometime before my next birthday, I'm sure.

So, I go next door to talk to the neighbor, Lou. Lou is about 87 or so. He says to just try putting the plug back in and see if it holds the pressure. Dang, someone needs to tell Tom Dashle that old people are useful.

And it worked. Lou said it was probably just not seated correctly and blew out because of theimproper seal. So I finished up and can now do the other stuff I was planning before I cleaned the ceiling.

And I got out to yoga class at 6pm, too. Amazing.

I wanted to post the pics of the micro-irrigation system. These are okay pictures, but the garden is actually looking more filled in just in the past two week. If you look closely, you can see the hoses from the main lines for the drip irrigation system I installed.

We have eaten all the first two crops of lettuce, we're eating strawberries (a few) every week, snow peas every week and are awaiting our very first SLO tomatoes! There are 3 that just started turning colors - it won't be long now!

On the Iranian Election...

My son called me chortling about the Iranian election. His take:

Bush made sure that the former Evil leader in Iraq was tried fairly in a court of his peers and that his sentence was carried out by the government of Iraq. i.e., a vicious dictator was toppled. People in Iraq - even the bad ones - have freedom. History, after all is said and done - will be kind to W, just probably not until the Obamabots are all dead and the Universities purged of people that should be in prison (Ayers/Churchhill/Doern).

That said, this toppling of Saddam and freeing of the Iraqi people emboldened the Iranians (who are, over all, the second best educated country in the Middle East). Almost 90% of the eligible voters went to the polls. And we are to believe that: (a) Amanutjob won by a landslide, (b) the three top contenders ALL LOST by 80% margin in their HOMETOWNS, (c) the results of a HAND COUNTED BALLOT were available only a couple HOURS after the polls closed (in the USSA, even with computers, it took days to complete the counts!) and (d) that many people all went to the polls just to ensure Amanutjob would remain in power?

Oh, and the foriegn journalists needed to be arrested ahead of time, cell phone towers disabled and internet service disrupted in order to “secure the peace”?
N-a-a-a-a-a-w, even Joe Biden isn’t that stupid. But I am ABSOLUTELY SURE ACORN and Obamessiah are very busy taking notes on how they can effect this scenario here in the USSA.

“If we could only do something about those pesky gun-n-God-clingers,” muses Obamessiah outloud…

My thought: There is probably not much difference between the candidates' policies. Dr. Happy says that the other folks were just running on the platform of wiping Israel off the face of the earth on different timetables. Different toots, same smells...

First there is the Moron Sotomayer being nominated to SCOTUS. This woman believes that she is more qualified than any white man BECAUSE she's a Hispanic woman. Yeah, with her 60% rate of reversal - we are in for a wild time, FER SURE. We can only hope that the other Justices beat/talk some sense into her thick skull so she is unable to do TOO much damage.

Next on our OMG list, FINALLY Obama begins coming clean on his "Muslim Roots". Too late for the morons in this country who VOTED THE ASSHOLE INTO THE WHITE HOUSE. AAARRRUUUGGGG! (Just think, Hillary could've been POTUS. Yup, works like ipeicac for me, too. Yeah, yeah - someone DID piss in my cornflakes this morning. Ate 'em anyway, thank you very much.)

Then, our president doesn't know about certain DOD Government Agency. He learns about it at a BURGER JOINT. Just gives me more confidence in the guy - he can really pick his advisors, eh? Here's the agency description:

Nice to know we beat out the other 57 Muslim countries...how's the Saudi king gonna take the news, I wonder? Guess we should get ready for that freaking TAX, too.

Then there were the two shootings: Tiller the Baby Killer in Kansas and an Arkansas Army Recruiter. Obama gets all weepy and indignant about Tiller being murdered by a Christian Extremist. Can't just say - nut job murderer, gotta insult the religion of 90+% of the country. Not a peep - even condolances to the family - the 20-something young man who just finished bootcamp and was gunned down by a Jihadi Convert newly trained in Yemen. Sends shivers down my spine for the military folks. Great behavior for their CinC. *sigh*

Lastly - airplanes are the targets again.

And someone is shooting at airplanes in Texas:

A Continental Express pilot reported seeing a "missile or rocket" flying near his aircraft over Friday night over Texas, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The pilot told the Federal Aviation Administration an object was spotted within 150 feet below his airplane around 8:15 p.m. Friday night over Liberty County, Texas, the newspaper reported.

Lord, my head hurts. That's what I get for not doing my yoga the past 10 weeks.

Remembering Our War Dead

It took me FOREVER to find ANYONE on the Central Coast memorializing fallen US Veterans. I guess it just isn't as important as trashing the previous administration, art exhibits and pushing to give extra-ordinary rights to homosexuals. Yeah, to each their own. I was just sadden by the lack of parades or even religious services to remember what it cost in blood to keep the freedoms the whiners and perverts enjoy.

To return to the topic of the day, our fallen soldiers and veterans, Mr. Cheney so aptly put it:

Like so many others who serve America, they are not the kind to insist on a thank-you. But I will always be grateful to each one of them, and proud to have served with them for a time in the same cause. They, and so many others, have given honorable service to our country through all the difficulties and all the dangers. I will always admire them and wish them well. And I am confident that this nation will never take their work, their dedication or their achievements for granted.

God bless all the families who have lost loved ones in the battles to keep America the "Shining City on a Hill", a beacon of true hope to people of all lands. And may He protect those now in service to our country so that these will be no more losses of soldiers.

Vanity, Thy Name is...

Well, I took off my acrylic nails and my hands just look, well, naked. I have kept them on for SO long, I feel very odd without them, but they were getting damaged by my garden work (even wearing rubber gloves), so until I get the garden "set", they stay off. (Probably will save enough to pay for the micro irrigation system. Photos will be up when it is complete - I am at 50% so far.)

I still need to set the boysenberry bushes and brick in that planter area. The bricks will slow the return of the "Creeping Grass from Hell", as my neighbor Lou calls it. He uses Round-up (tm) on his side of the fence; I dig that crap up. And I am doing battle with the dandelions now. Have a battle scar to prove it. I know I'll lose that war, but I won this skirmish - that dandelion is in the lawn recycle bin. I thought about putting them in the compost heap, but I don't want to chance the seeds/spores surviving and ending up in my garden.

Peoples' Socialist Republik of Kalifornia did something Right yesterday. And Auhnoold says he "hears the voters' anger". Yeah, like all the way in Wash DC he heard it...lol!
And The California Commission will be cutting lawmakers' salaries by 10%. Not sure when it takes effect, but, um, probably not immediately like every other state employee LAST MONTH. (Actually, the article states that it won't happen until AT LEAST 2010.)

But, from the article on G.A.S.'s Wash trip, it's reported that Obamessiah will still be partially bailing out the PSRK:

The governor was informed that California remains eligible to receive another $8 billion in stimulus money for its Medicaid program, the one bright spot for state officials after voters on Tuesday soundly defeated five ballot measures aimed at closing California's huge budget shortfall.

LA Times reported this:

Schwarzenegger has called for cuts that would hit every corner of the state. He announced plans to lay off 5,000 of the state's 235,000 workers and has proposed slashing education by up to $5 billion, selling state properties, borrowing $2 billion from local governments and potentially reducing eligibility for healthcare programs...Worst-case scenarios also call for the release from state prisons of up to 19,000 illegal immigrants, who would face deportation, and the transfer of up to 23,000 other prisoners to county jails

If we stopped paying for the illegals' OTHER benefits, PSRK could save around $10B. That would leave us ONLY $3-5B short.

Fat chance.

Lettuce talk about the economy....

We ate our first lettuce from the garden yesterday. YUM! I made a kidney bean salad with red wine vinegar dressing and plpped it on the bed of lettuce with a piece of baked salmon and a hunk of fresh challah. Dr. Happy is still happy!

As for the stock market, Home Depot just got another chunk o'change from me for the micro irrigation supplies and Yahoo seems to think they are doing well (along with Hershey's, Kraft and Smith & Wesson):

On the earnings front, there are several major retailers set to post quarterly scorecards, including Dow component Home Depot and its major rival Lowe's Cos. Earlier this week, Citigroup upgraded its rating on Home Depot's stock to "buy" from "hold," saying it believes the earnings-per-share estimates for the top home improvement retailer may be conservative for 2009. Lowe's has reiterated its first-quarter outlook for profits and sales.

The Story of My Garden - So Far

In the beginning, Dr. Happy was a happy batchelor and, although GREEN is his favorite color, he was seldom so interested in keeping it green that the backyard was watered. Mainly 'cause he was working all the time and entertaining me, no small feat, of course. So, by default, his second favorite color became BROWN. Here is a little sample of what was here before me and my trusty Garden Claw (tm) moved in and got started. (Note the grapefruit tree in the right-hand corner. It will appear later in the story.)

As you can see, visually appealing in a rustic, eh, Mountain Man-kinda way. Unfortunately, not so tasty or appealing to MOI.

I have used probably 20 bags of amending soil to get the dirt back up to my exacting green thumb standards for my Precious Plants. My darling Dr. Happy still has not bought stock in Home Depot (HD). Their measley 3-4% dividend is not so exciting to him, I guess...

Although I started some of my plants in little peat starters, the tomatoes and strawberries were from the Local Nursery. Unfortunately, for Dr. Happy, they are not a publicly traded company. They do, however, give some nice discounts - sometimes. (Like this weekend is 20% off on everything! Woo-hoo!) Pictured above are the boysenberry and honeydew plants.

The beginning of all good gardens starts with a compost bin. Here is the obligatory, but not cooperating compost pile. It is just sitting there like a bump on a log.

On to the exciting part of the show: De Plants, De Plants!

Here is a pic of the garden starting in the right hand corner - the Strawberry Bed. I planted 18 plants and we've already had a batch this year. They were yummy!

We are probably about 2 weeks away from enjoying the mixed salad greens from "The Lettuce Bed".

The Spinach and Green Onions are just starting to peek out at the sun...

There was a very nice Rose Bush under the Kitchen Window that smells so wonderful, I just let it stay there near the Spinach Bed.

Moving to the Other Side of the Gray Bricks (there is no "side-that-starts-with-L Side" in MY Victory Garden), there is a long patch of Dirt (starting at the gate and moving toward the backyard) where the cukes, cantaloupe, zuchini and scallopped squashes, watermelons and one honeydew melon plant will all live in harmony...hopefully. They will meet up with...

The Brussel Sprout plants against the fence, with four rows of Bok Choy plants between them and the bricks. Moving further into the backyard...

My salute to Iowa: "Looks Like Corn" against the fence. Hopefully, it will "taste" like corn in August.
Can't really tell, but there are short rows of beets and carrots between the corn and bricks.

And at the front of the Other Side are the Pea Plants. Between the Corn and Peas, there are green bean plants. I expect to plant the green peppers, chili peppers and something else (probably more green onions) between the bricks and peas/beans.

Moving around the yard away from the Veggies, toward the back fence, here are the Blueberry Bushes. (Yeah, I voted for Bush. Like that is such ancient history. Get over it already.) Our next door neighbor, Lou (who is older than Methuselah and even Harry F.) told me that nobody in the area has had much success growing blueberries. (They like acidic soil with a pH of around 4.5. I figure my ascebic wit should be enough to get them to produce fruit.)

Here is the Wild Rose Bush going, counter-clock-wise (screw that Right and L**t Crap!) from the Compose Heap. It will be getting a seriously needed trim next week.

Next up, is the Bird of Paradise, also in need of some pruning. Again, not so tasty, but nice to look at in the winter.

Here's the new Valencia Orange Tree. This is it's first year in our backyard. We'll see if I can manage to help it survive.

Next, there is a patch of calendula and I CANNOT get rid of them!!!), then the Ruby Red Grapefruit Tree, in honor of my mother, Ruby...Yeah, the pic is side-ways and I am not editing it just for you.

The corner is wild grass, dandelions and weeds (review the pic at the top of the post.). Continuing counter-clockwise...

...is where the boysenberries will live. They are less fussy about soil, so we should have some in the autumn.

In the center of the yard is The Fig Tree that I gave Dr. Happy for The-Goyesha-Holiday-Where-You-Give-Tokens-Of-Affection-and-if-you-are-smart-chocolate. Dr. Happy planted it. He likes it there. He is hoping it will grow large enough that he will have a shady place to sit on the grass when he gets old and retires. Yeah, like he is going to retire. Or sit. *Pfffftttt.*

Finally, we come to the Herb Bed. So far, I have planted Lavender, Lemon Balm, Basil, Rosemany, Oregano and, ummm, something else. I'm going to plant some cilantro and something-entirely-different-from-something-else. I'm sure it will taste good when I cook with it.

Last, here my Frog Friend that I just picked up today. I like him in the Herb Bed for now, but He may be moved to someplace else. Dunno where, but we'll see. He seems happy here for now.

I bought the materials to put in the Drip Irrigation system today in honor of our Israeli siblings who have to do that. (BUY HD STOCK, Dr. Happy!) Plus, The Governator is messin' with the water supply. So we need to conserve water because it will soon be getting even MORE expensive and scarce.

Soon, very soon, My Pretties, Very Soon...

Unless, the Gorebots are right (which they are not) and the oceans will be rising rapidly in the very near future. In which case, we will all be swimming to Texas or Colorado or Kansas. (Yeah, good luck with that one!)

Meanwhile, George, in talking about melting "stuff" and flooding "junk", there was a bright, shiny lining to the clouds in Washington DC. (Collapse Of Antarctic Ice Sheet Would Likely Put Washington, D.C. Largely Underwater) We can only hope that Congress is in session and Obama is home for the week. And all the boats in the area have big ole holes in the bottoms and there are NO floatation devices for a 300 mile radius. Of course, The People's Republik of Kalifornia will also be under water - and I'm not so sure I'll be able to swim to Kansas...

The vast overreaction to this virus and its potential has severe economic consequences as it did previously in 1976, 2003, and 2006. This time the hysteria may lead to billions of dollars lost to the travel industry, tourism, the Mexican economy, and to closing schools due to hysterical children and overreacting nurses. Vice President Biden’s statement that we should all avoid planes, trains, and crowded places was not at all consistent with the very low prevalence of the virus. It made me think he had become disoriented and suddenly thought he was back in 1918! Even President Obama’s statement that we should wash our hands (of course we should, they are loaded with bacteria and viruses of all kinds) sent the wrong message that there is far more of this particular virus around than there actually is. Okay, the MSM has a grip o'us with our panties bunched over the Flying Pig Flu (FPF). But now, it is REALLY getting nutty. Egypt is slaughtering all pigs, companies that produce Thyroid medicine are putting out press releases, and now we can't call a pig a "pig".

Luv George and all, but in his factoring of mortality rate for FPF using calculations and statistics from WHO, it seems to me that reports show that there was gross underreporting of infection. For instance, one report I read reported over 1000 people in Mexico alone were infected. Today there was another report saying, AHEM, that there may be some exagerration of numbers. I know we don't wanna stand around holding our "privates" waiting for data ('cause now we KNOW it will be nairishkite), but neither do we want to be part of the chattering masses, performing the stir-n-scare for the Administration. Here's a fer-instance:

"In the United States, the confirmed case count stood at 132. State lab operators say there are more cases than the confirmed number because they are not testing all suspected cases, focusing on finding new outbreak hot spots and limiting the flu's spread.

In Mexico, the outbreak's epicenter, new cases and the death rate were leveling off, the country's top medical officer said. Health authorities said they have confirmed 300 swine flu cases and 12 deaths due to the virus...

As recently as Wednesday, Mexico's health secretary said there 168 suspected swine flu deaths and almost 2,500 suspected cases. Mexican officials have stopped updating that number and say those totals may have been inflated."

I suppose the Chinese herbs, antihistamines and other assorted chemicals with which I've been dosing myself to get rid of this hideous cold may be affecting my ability to process data. BTW, my accupuncturist told me of a soup one can make to fight off runny noses and "stuff":

1 tbl yang jiang preserved beans,
5-6 green onions (scallions)
1/2 tsp fresh ginger
couple white pepper corns
4 cups water (I used prepared kosher chicken broth)
I also added a handful of green pea pods and 1/2 green pepper
Boil for a few minutes and drink.
I found it a little salty, but tasty. And I wanted to pick out the beans, they felt mushy in mah mouth. But I didn't.

OTC meds, lemon tea and soup be darned, I'm going to see the accupuncturist today. I am SO impatient to be well again. But, did that encourage me to follow Dr. Happy's advice and stay prone as much possible. N-O-O-O-O-O! I thought working in the garden would make me feel better. Like compounding grass allergies and Nasty Cold was a good idea. You know, the homeopathic thing - like-cures-like? Yeah, don't try that at home...

Off-topic: George has some interesting background on the the transmission, mode of death and treatment protocols (better said, lack there-of) for the Flying Pig Flu. Most of the data he has relates to the Avian flu from a couple years ago, but, since this one is a COMBO TREAT of swine and avian flu viruses, some of it will be applicable. I like the new moniker he posted - goes with the HHS reaction - "You-the-people will get all of the above either when you're all dead or when pigs fly, which ever comes first." I know which I'm betting on.)

No, not Obama. I meant George at Urban Survival. (Okay, yup, I am still really "schnuffy", tired and achey - but not so much that I can't be a little snotty. Dr. Happy says it is a rhinovirus, dropped some cans of chicken soup on the counter - high-tailed it to the desert to work for a few days. *b'rack, b'rack* Alright, truthfully, he made a fresh pot of lemon green tea before he left, too.)

While I was hepped up on antihistamines, decongestants and Advil trying to achieve "Claratin Clear" nirvana, George was doing his darndest to provide credible links that I meant to have yesterday about the Mexican Flu being a "man-created disaster". (Naw, we all know women wouldn't be doing crap like that, now, don't we? *INSERT EVIL HILLARY CACKLE HERE*)

(Food, water, bleach, latril gloves and meds - no smart aleckey comments from the Peanut Gallery, Folks!) You have plenty of time to gather your supplies. Here are some facts about the virus and flu viruses in general:

* The World Health Organization has confirmed at least some of the cases are a never-before-seen strain of influenza A virus, carrying the designation H1N1.

* Although it's called swine flu, this new strain is not infecting pigs and has never been seen in pigs. The threat is person to person transmission.

* It is genetically different from the fully human H1N1 seasonal influenza virus that has been circulating globally for the past few years. The new flu virus contains DNA typical to avian, swine and human viruses, including elements from European and Asian swine viruses.

Of course, this was the PERFECT situation to get Congress to approve Kathleen Sebalius as the Head of HHS. Yup, like we need a enthusiastic euthanist in charge of Health and Human Services. My eldest son in Kansas said that now that she is out of the state, they are building a fence 200 miles high to keep her from getting back in. No hope of getting her to leave DC, I suppose. We can only hope the Mexican flu will blanket Capitol Hill and slow down the fascist assault. *sigh*

Mexico Flu, Pandemics and Fear-mongering

Yup. I believe that this one was a "man-created disaster", to quote our "favorite" DHS Director.

Obama declares Swine Flu emergency; plays golf. He can play golf because Bush prepared for a pandemic and Obama can breath a sigh of relief.

And look at this from David Brown of the Washington Post:

U.S. public health officials did not know about a growing outbreak of swine flu in Mexico until nearly a week after that country started invoking protective measures, and didn't learn that the deaths were caused by a rare strain of the influenza until after Canadian officials did...
Whether delayed communication among the countries has had a practical consequence is unknown. However, it seems that U.S. public health officials are still largely in the dark about what's happening in Mexico two weeks after the outbreak was recognized...
The earliest case found in Mexico was a 39-year-old woman who died April 12 of severe viral pneumonia in San Luis Potosi, a city of about 700,000 in central Mexico.

With that in mind, I want to reflect on the infamous 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. This virus was also a swine-flu virus, and it led to widespread human-human transmission. It is estimated to have killed 20-100 million world-wide and 500-675 thousand in the US. It typically killed about 5% of those infected, while this current outbreak in Mexico may have a kill rate of 0.5%. Yearly flu epidemics in America might lead to death 0.002% of the time.

Why was the Spanish flu of 1918 so deadly? One should remember that the world had just emerged from a world war, many were starved and in poor health even prior to contracting the flu. When pathologists examined lung samples of those 1918 flu victims, most deaths were attributed to secondary bacterial pneumonia. It is theorised that that particular flu strain was very effective at destroying the respiratory epithelium and preventing the self cleaning function of our airways I described above. This way, the affected individuals became very susceptible to bacterial infections. Although such pneumonia is now easily treated with antibiotics, these drugs were not available at that time. Penicillin was only discovered in 1928.

ABC never mentions a simple fact: all multiple victim public shootings with more than 3 people killed have occurred where permitted concealed handguns are prohibited. Rather than studying what actually happens during these shootings, ABC conjured up rigged experiments aimed at convincing Americans that guns are ineffective. There is a bill in CA up for vote that would allow out of state folks with a CWP from another jurisdiction to carry in CA and I strongly urge people to press their Representatives to vote "YES". The bill is AB-1167 and and would provide for reciprocity for out of state CCWP holders. This bill would add the following to the CA penal code:

(a) Persons holding a valid permit or license to carry a concealed handgun from any state or a political subdivision of a state shall be deemed a licensee under subparagraph (A) of paragraph (1) of subdivision (a) of Section 12050.
(b) The Department of Justice shall enter into reciprocity agreements with all other states that have the legal authority to enter into those agreements so that licensees under Section 12050 may carry firearms in those states pursuant to the conditions imposed by Section 12050. The department shall each month maintain and publish a list of those states with which this state has established reciprocity.

AB357 ease the CCWP process for CA citizen by making California a shall issue ccw state. This would allow more law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed weapon. I also strongly support this measure.

I have been following the protests since the inception. From the Pulled Pork Protest in Seattle started by a Malkin Blog reader to the Pork Rinds for Schummer to the "We Surround Them"/912 Project on to the actual Tea Party idea at Michelle Malkin's blog - it has been a heady, emotional ride.

Has the MSM been able to get any of this history right? Feh! Not at all. The protests have been called Right-wing wackos, disgruntled-sore-losers, astro-turfers, and worse. One MSNBC writer can't make up his minds if protesters are controlled by the RNC ("these parties have been co-opted by a major America political party")or apart from the leaders ("One can sense a hesitance from the establishment wing of the GOP about getting too involved in this movement"). (It's neither - the protests are non-partisan.)

Palestinians decry Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit
April 12, 2009

TORONTO (JTA) -- Palestinian officials called on Canada to cancel a planned exhibit of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The officials say the exhibit would violate international law.

In a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and directors of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Hamdan Taha, director general of the archaeological department in the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, alleges the scrolls were acquired illegally by Israel when the Jewish state annexed East Jerusalem in 1967.

The Palestinians claim the six-month exhibit slated to begin in June violates at least four international conventions or protocols on the treatment of cultural goods that were "illegally" obtained, the Toronto Star reported Friday.

"The exhibition would entail exhibiting or displaying artifacts removed from the Palestinian territories" by Israel, Taha wrote.

Pnina Shor, head of the artifacts treatment and conservation department at the Israel Antiquities Authority, which is organizing the exhibit jointly with the museum, told the Star the complaint was unfounded.

"We are the custodians of the Dead Sea Scrolls," Shor said. "As such, we have a right to exhibit them and to conserve them."

William Thorsell, the museum's CEO, said he is "quite certain the scrolls fall within the parameters of the law."

A spokesperson for Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon declined to comment.

Jasim, whose name is being withheld for his safety, has received strong support from the U.S. military, and the Department of Homeland Security approved his application for a visa. Okay, I've lived in PSRK for well over 25 years. I have seen people in need. My family has, at times, been some of them. I have even seen tent cities before, back in the 90's. (WOW - time flies...)

"'One in 10 Americans gets help to buy food.' The story then went on to say that more than 2.9-million folks right here in the Republic of Texas get help - a good thing as I see it. Nationally the average benefit works out to something like $112 per person, although in California the benefits are about to take a major jump upward - going up 13.6% - and curiously, California has fewer people on food stamps than does Texas, with only 2.5 million receiving help.

Since tax time is just around the corner, this all gets me to wondering about the proper ‘role of the dole’. Obviously, helping people who are hungry, laid off, homeless and living in tents or cars is the right thing to do. But, how far up the food chain does it go?

In California, where the Governator opened up state fair grounds, Sacramento tent city residents are saying they won’t be moved from their present location. This all sets up the ugly prospect of something we’ve been eyeing in the HalfPastHuman predictive linguistics for a while to become very real: the potential for a showdown between “authorities” and the homeless, since as KCRA reports “Some at ‘tent city’ unhappy with Cal Expo site” and “Sacramento homeless camp expected to be shut down.”

...Mr. Mehsud's claim of credit added to the fears that militant violence which has engulfed much of northwestern Pakistan is now spreading to the nuclear-armed country's eastern heartland, Punjab. The province had until recently been spared much of the violence, although some of Pakistan's most potent Islamic militant groups originated in the region and still draw recruits from its poor, rural villages.

I am pretty sure that I remain the only American reporter to have traveled to leftist President Daniel Ortega’s Nicaragua to find out what the Iranian government is doing there. I apologize if I missed something out there. While I appreciated having the exclusive at the time, more than a year after my travels I continue to wonder why there there is such a persistent lack of curiosity from my mainstream press corps colleagues.

The press, quite rightly, has swarmed like migrating wildebeest all over the the Islamic Republic of Iran’s burgeoning economic and diplomatic ties to Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela and, to a certain degree, Iran’s spread to other anti-U.S. countries in South America, such as Bolivia. But with the exception of my own coverage, there’s been hardly a peep about the fact that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad planted the Iranian flag so far north in Nicaragua as soon as the time-tested American nemesis Daniel Ortega took office in January 2007. In fact, Ahmadinejad considered Ortega’s ascension so important that he was in Nicaragua to attend the inauguration. Within months, Iran was promising hundreds of millions in economic projects — and quickly set up a diplomatic mission in a tony Managua neighborhood where it could all supposedly be coordinated. Now Iran is extending its reach even further north, right into Mexico City with equally under-covered proposals to vastly expand tenuous ties to America’s immediate southern neighbor.

The national security implications of Iran forging paths throughout America’s southern sphere of influence are striking. Iran has long been known for using Hezbollah — the U.S.-designated terror organization it sired — to sow mayhem against its perceived enemies from the diplomatic cover provided by Iranian embassies. When considering Iran’s move to Nicaragua, it is important to remember that Iran had Hezbollah blow up the Israeli embassy and a Jewish center in Argentina not so long ago, killing and wounding hundreds. This is according to a recent 800-page Argentine indictment and still outstanding arrest warrants for top Iranian officials and Revolutionary Guards who carried out the bombings under diplomatic cover provided by Iran’s Buenos Aires embassy.

But unlike those fairly distant countries, Nicaragua is close to the U.S. southern border and also to Mexico’s vast oil and gas infrastructure, which a small home-grown Mexican militant group was easily able to bomb at least half a dozen times in 2006 and 2007. Thousands of Nicaraguan laborers routinely cross the Mexican border and make their way over the U.S. border in search of work. It’s a pretty doable trip. And the mullahs, in addition to pushing for a greater presence in Mexico, keep on expanding in Nicaragua even now. If Iran ever got mad again about anything, couldn’t the ruling mullahs stage an Argentine repeat performance closer to home?

With all this in mind, and Bush saber rattling over the Iranian nuclear program, I persuaded my newspaper to send me to Nicaragua in October 2007. What I found should have been enough to pique the imagination of other reporters, more investigation, or even just some shallow coverage. But to date, there has been nothing more about Iran in Nicaragua, while there’s still plenty about Iran in distant Venezuela. The Iranians must be thrilled to operate in such a blackout.

Here’s what I came away with after 10 days chasing Iranians all over Nicaragua, trying to determine whether their promises of massive economic development were real or merely excuses to set up a diplomatic mission where terrorist operatives could work so close to the American and Mexican frontiers:
I found that no Iranian money or concrete planning had materialized for a promised new $350 million port on the eastern seaboard bay known as Monkey Point. The Iranians had only made at least a couple of easy day trips there and elsewhere around the country aboard helicopters. Neither had anything developed from Iranian promises to redevelop the dilapidated western port of Corinto, which supposedly would be linked to this Monkey Point port by a dry land canal. To date, no progress on either project has been reported. But the Iranian diplomatic mission that American national security experts most feared was sure up and humming with activity. It has steadily expanded its “staff,” according to some scattered local Nicaragua news reports.

I also discovered that suspected Iranian Revolutionary Guard operatives had been moving in and out of the country in unusual ways that assured secrecy. For instance, I was given ministry of migration documents that show a senior Nicaraguan minister had allowed 21 Iranian men to enter without passport processing. This was exactly the kind of activity that preceded the Argentina bombings in 1992 and 1994. It’s the same kind of secretive movement going on in and out of Venezuela that gives current and former American counterterrorism officials — and Jewish communities in the region — the cold sweats.

Upon arriving in Managua, I linked up with a local interpreter to track down the Iranians and get them talking. In Managua’s exclusive suburb of Las Colinas, I noticed the distinctive red, white, and green flag of Iran hanging limply from a pole poking up beyond rolls of concertina wire that lined the 12-foot-high walls of a compound. But Iran’s new envoy to Nicaragua, Akbar Esmaeil-Pour, appeared to be in no talking mood over the course of several days. In response to doorbell rings, the face of the envoy’s personal driver — a local Nicaraguan — appeared in a head-sized slot in the metal gate. Two Nicaraguan policemen opened a door and stepped out with AK-47s, looking leery.
“He very much appreciates that you came all the way from America just to see him,” the face said. “The ambassador will call you when he has time. Maybe in a few days.”

And so it politely went for several more days, until the personal driver, feeling sorry for me, finally gave up the envoy’s personal cell phone number. A call to it drew an angry response from Mr. Esmaeil-Pour.
Members of Ortega’s Sandinista Party scoffed at any suggestion that the Iranian intent is somehow nefarious, despite what happened in Argentina. Several lawmakers told me the Iranian move to Nicaragua and South America made perfect sense in light of the American-led trade sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program. But what could possibly be Iran’s return on investment? Nicaragua is dirt poor; its main export is bananas.

Former FBI Special Agent Jim Conway, who managed the bureau’s counter terrorism programs in Mexico after 9/11, is now a counterterrorism consultant in Houston. He knows Iran and Hezbollah like the back of his hand. Here’s what he told me the other day:

What interest and what could Nicaragua’s poverty stricken government offer Iran and Hezbollah other than “access” and a base of operations in close proximity to the U.S.? We know that Iran has built a massive diplomatic mission in Managua, which provides a huge blanket of “diplomatic cover” to Iran and its embassy personnel. What are all those Iranian “diplomats” doing in Nicaragua? Studying the banana industry?

In an office overlooking his small newsroom, the editor of the right-of-center La Prensa newspaper, Eduardo Enriquez, told me how he reads the Iranian move to Managua:

Only the most naïve believe there’ll be any economic development. The Iranians see this as a nice point to come and bother the Americans. The only thing we can offer them is a safe place where they can move Revolutionary Guard around. There is nothing else here for the Iranians.

The American authorities haven’t been particularly helpful to me, which struck me as more than odd, since Americans have quite often heaped public disdain on the Iran-Venezuela alliance. The American embassy openly supported Mr. Ortega’s opponents during the 2006 election campaign. A year later, though, embassy officials turned down all of my interview requests. With just one lone Texas reporter asking about the Iranians in Nicaragua, maybe they don’t feel enough pressure to give up any answers.

Given the ink expended about Iran in South America, the mullahs’ furthest reach north continues to go oddly — and conspicuously — unexamined.

Why Mexico helps US fight terror: Its new border checkpoints snagged seven Iraqis trying to sneak into the US last year.

TUCSON, ARIZ. - A top priority of the United States government is to prevent a determined terrorist from crossing the US- Mexico border. It is also becoming a primary mission for Mexico - and the first place it's focusing on is the 375-mile, desolate stretch of land that abuts Arizona.

In addition to sharing intelligence and cooperating on investigations with its US counterparts in Arizona, Mexico last year set up three checkpoints along known human-smuggling routes on its side of the border and plans to add two more.

Between August, when the checkpoints became operational, and December, Mexican officials stopped 1,277 non-Mexicans (OTMs, for "other than Mexicans") from crossing into Arizona, according to a Mexican government report obtained by the Monitor. The report shows that most of the OTMs came from Central and South America, but seven are listed as Iraqis.

FBI officials decline to say if they know what became of the Iraqis detained in Mexico. The seven - believed to have been apprehended simultaneously at one checkpoint - could be members of a single family or unrelated individuals simply trying to find a better life in the US. But they also could have been trying to illegally cross the southern border for nefarious purposes.

That's where the additional checkpoints could prove crucial.

The Mexican government has "an immense interest in making sure terrorists don't cross from Mexico into the US," says Ben Peres of the FBI office in Tucson, the bureau's liaison here with Mexico on cross-border issues. "If something were to harm the US, it would harm them, too."

Government officials and terror experts have long fretted about the porous border between the US and Mexico. With the onset of the Iraq war in 2003, they worried that teams of Iraqis might cross the border to set off terror attacks inside the US, and they say they know that people tied to Al Qaeda have entered the US through Mexico using false identities. One they cite is Mahmoud Youssef Kourani, who paid to be smuggled across the US-Mexico border in 2001 and later was convicted and imprisoned for providing material support to Hizbullah, which is on the US list of terror groups.

Last March, US officials intercepted a letter purportedly written by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Al Qaeda leader in Iraq, who suggested to his acolytes that it would be easy to infiltrate the US through the southern border.
For its part, the US government is apprehending record numbers of illegal immigrants on the Arizona side of the border. In 2005, Border Patrol officials nabbed 577,418 illegals. Of those, 14,323 were non-Mexicans - up from 9,974 in 2004. Most OTMs came from Central and South America. But 407 came from elsewhere, some from nations designated as "countries of interest," meaning those that are known to harbor terrorists. (Note from tlc: That's just the ones that were caught.)

US Customs and Border Patrol officials say the number of OTMs from "countries of interest" is small. But they don't divulge these because of "national security and law-enforcement sensitivity issues," says Michael Gramley, Border Patrol spokesman in Yuma, Ariz.

"Borders inherently are dangerous places where the state has the least amount of control and supervision," says Adrian Pantoja, a political scientist at Arizona State University in Tempe. Measures that have been put into place to secure the border so far, he says, are largely symbolic.

"If the US wanted to seal the border with Mexico it could. Look at the demilitarized zone between South Korea and North Korea," Dr. Pantoja says. "The dilemma is really between political will and economic necessity. How do you protect the nation's security while ensuring its economic well-being?"

Still, cooperation between Mexico and the US is steadily improving on the issue of illegal entry of OTMs, FBI officials say. Although they cannot discuss the Iraqis' case specifically, the officials explain how the current system works.
OTMs detained on the Mexican side of the border are screened by Mexican officials for possible criminal or potential terror activities. If evidence of wrongdoing surfaces, Mexican intelligence officials, in turn, share that information with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

ICE officials then pass that information to the Joint Terrorism Task Force, in a weekly meeting. In Tucson, the JTTF is made up of an FBI official, who leads the effort, and representatives from Border Patrol, ICE, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Arizona state police, and two county sheriff's departments.

"It would be our job to corroborate that information and act appropriately, or debunk it," says the FBI's director of the JTTF in Tucson.

FBI agents in Tucson describe a successful operation in which they have worked with their Mexican counterparts to stop a cross-border people-smuggling ring, one with potential terrorism risks. A joint sting operation led to the arrest last May of Iranian-born Zeayadali Malhamdary, a legal permanent resident of the US. Mr. Malhamdary is now in Arizona awaiting trial on charges of smuggling illegal immigrants into the US. Officials say he smuggled in about 60 Iranians via Mexico - and provided high-quality fraudulent documents for entry into the US. The FBI says it is tracking down the 60 Iranians.

Colorado Springs Welcomed The Next POTUS to Town

Yes Indeed, Sarah is busy in Colorado Springs right now with John McCain spreading their message of REAL CHANGE in the RIGHT direction (pun intended). They are talking to a crowd waiving American Flags that were in trash bags by dumpsters at the Dem Convention site. Vendors noticed the flags in trash bags, rescued them and now they are being waived by people who REALLY love our country, at a McCain rally down the freeway from Denver.

I just returned from Colorado Jet Center in Colorado Springs and I have pics of the “adopted” Invesco Flags as they were being passed out. They waved high and proud as the next POTUS and VPOTUS spoke about the changes that they - the Two Mavericks - will take to Washington.

Oh, and Cindy looked divine! (Uh, like gorgeous, not like The One who thinks he’s divinity…)

We have an idea to get more Dem supporters: They LOVE free stuff…so have free keggers the night before the election. Either they will be too hung over to vote or too happy with McCain for the free brews….of course, I’m sure Cindy will give the campaign a discount…lol

FROM ANOTHER BLOG: "I just came back from a McCain rally…the GOP better get on the ball over the next few weeks.
On the whole, I have to rate the rally a “C-.” I am tired of hearing of the POW stories (although the new one I heard today was interesting). They gave slightly modified versions of their convention speeches. I was hoping for something new.
Bad location, bad logistics, tired stories, too long of a wait in the blazing Colorado sun."

Well, it WAS hot out on the tarmac. I got there at 8am when it was 55 degrees (doors opened at 9) and there were a lot of people (really long lines - probably atleast 1 mile long) and parking did suck (dirt lots - in my KIA Spectra is not fun). Locals (yup, I am now) know that the streets and airport weren’t build to handle that kind of traffic.

What the heck did the DIP expect? If you know the airport (it is small) and the streets, you would EXPECT it to be crowded. I walked about 3 miles (needed a Coors when I got home) but it only took about an hour to get out and home. (I live 30 minutes from the airport.) I guess I am used to events in Los Angeles where it takes 2 hours to get in and 2 to get home. Springs people think a 30 minute drive is a horrible inconvenience…and I am getting spoiled here just like DW…LOL

I suppose DIPPY Writer wouldn’t have complained if it was a Van Halen concert or the DNC with the free weed, eh?

S/he was right about the speeches being revised from the RNC. But I really enjoyed hearing the local politicos give their shpiels. I don’t know them yet like I did the LA county folks, so that was good. And when the Invesco Flag story was told and the Vets started passing them out, and we had them in our hands and same Lee Greenwoods song. Ahhh, I was glad I had a tissue! And I got to meet some really great people and hear their stories and why they support McCain/Palin.
